La proposta progettuale ha inteso valorizzare la regolarità dell’impianto esistente, affiancando al sistema di colonne in ghisa un sistema naturale simile, interpretato secondo le tecnologie costruttive attuali, indipendentemente dall’originario: questo nell’intenzione di preservare la memoria del luogo pur inserendo elementi architettonici nuovi.
Il sistema di copertura centrale a capanna viene quindi sottolineato da un sistema di copertura laterale a falde con lo stesso orientamento delle centrali, privilegiando l’illuminazione dei due ballatoi inseriti nelle campate laterali.
L’inversione delle falde laterali rispetto alle originarie è il segno del cambiamento d’uso dell’immobile, da pescheria a sala di esposizione, pur conservando la memoria dell’uso originario attraverso: la sottolineatura della campata centrale; il mantenimento dell’imposta originaria delle falde laterali, invertite nella proposta progettuale; il taglio inclinato dei pannelli espositivi mobili al piano ammezzato che coincide con l’inclinazione originaria delle falde laterali; il mantenimento di un bancone in pietra al centro a cui si riferisce tutto il sistema espositivo a supporto orizzontale.

The building of the old fish market which had been used since the end of the Sixties’ has a plan with three naves: the main one is reserved to the public and the laterals are equipped with desks in stone for the fish selling. The interior space was characterized by the presence of columns in cast iron and metal trusses with an overlying wood truss surface. The natural light penetrating from above favoured the central nave which set up itself as a covered gallery.
The concept that guided the project, which won the regional competition for ideas promoted by the Municipality in April 1987, was to place side by side to the cast iron columns a similar figurative and structural system almost independent from the original one and interpreted with new building technology.The aim was that of preserve the memories of the place – the market’s place and the covered galleries in glass and iron – but inserting some new architectural elements like the two mezzanine levels along the lateral naves which can host small exhibition.
The central covering system is proposed also in the two lateral naves that receive the light reflecting it inside.
The lower level of the roof cover in these new lateral naves is kept at the original height and it permits to value the dimensions of the pre existing space after the change of its different usages.
The central nave is the principal figurative element and it is emphasized by the counterpoint that there is between the intrados’ wood surface of the central roof and the white lateral ones, with natural light, of the two lateral naves.
An iron catwalk connect the two half mezzanine floors, prepared to host expositive paths, flexible in respect to variable necessities. All in all, looking up along these paths it is possible to see the sky over the skylights and the Donà tower of the medieval Castle, from which the city has its origins.
