|Infrastructural requalification of the right bank alongside Po river | Turin
The cycle and pedestrian path along the right bank of the Po, in the centre of Turin, presented lots of technical problems in the way from the bridge “Balbis” to the bridge “Isabella”, in front of the Valentino’s Park and Castle, differently from the more or less 25 kilometres along the other bank, at the time of its realization.
To assure the necessary continuity to all the right bank, previously interrupted by bridges, the interested way, almost 1600 meters long, asked the contextual and organic resolution of most of the interconnection problems, in an interesting context characterized by different monumental and hydraulic bonds’ building.
Two particular infrastructures characterize the path suitable for cycling with their forms but different constructive technologies, beyond the peculiar conformation of the banks and of its landscape: the “Principessa Isabella’s” bridge, built between 1876 and 1880 through Ernesto Ghiotti’s project with masonry vaults and a rich decorative structure, and the “Balbis’s” bridge, built between 1926 and 1928 through Giuseppe Pagano Pogatschnig’s project, by a structure in reinforced concrete, from the bare covering by big slabs of grit.
The intervention was conceived in a way to leave these two bridges intact, without founding structures, structural and constructive interferences, therefore the new parts are technically “reversible” to form paths and underpasses.
The new stair near Isabella’s bridge is the theme of more engagement in putting near the monument new equipments, and it’s allowed by the Superintendence office for architectural heritage of Turin after a careful control of the possible alternatives.
The track place side by side the Po’s urban road in the way of the “Parco Regionale del Po Torinese”, which fixes a tight speed of environmental and panoramic protection alongside all the fluvial context with its sectorial planning instruments. The organic insert in the existing context, the property of the existing land surfaces, the achievement of pieces of furniture, the differentiation of the characters as regards the existing natural context to keep or a new plant of some trunks is the result of an accurate and complex work, approved by the “Ente Parco” administration.
The insertion of the cycle and pedestrian path in city parks, placed in the right bank, gives the opportunity to preview, with the project, renovation intervention of existing trees and plants now in degrade, which will give space at “parterres” with soft geometry, formed by herbaceous species which are typical of the fluvial contexts. In the end, groups of strong and prestigious tree groups are confirmed.
